What Gravel Roads Actually Do
- Stone chips — thrown up by your own tyres or oncoming traffic, chipping through clear coat and exposing bare paint or metal underneath.
- Fine dust — settles into every panel gap, badge recess and wheel, and if washed off incorrectly (or not washed at all), acts like light sandpaper across the paint surface every time it's disturbed.
- Undercarriage grime — builds up on suspension components, exhausts and wheel arches, trapping moisture against metal.
Protecting a Rural Daily Driver
- Wash more often, not less. Dust sitting on paint does more damage every time it gets brushed off with a dry cloth — regular proper washing avoids that.
- Consider paint correction and ceramic coating. A coating won't stop a direct stone chip, but it significantly reduces how much dust and grime actually bonds to the paint between washes, and makes each wash far gentler on the surface.
- Get the undercarriage looked at periodically — especially heading into winter, when grime plus moisture is the exact combination that accelerates rust.
